Coalition of Secular Voters

Welcome

The Coalition of Secular Voters is a non-partisan community based organization dedicated to mobilizing and informing voters who cherish the separation of church and state. The Coalition of Secular Voters depends on community involvement, both "on the ground" and on this website. All registered users have the ability to post to the blogs here and are encouraged to do so in order to keep this website up to date on the latest information regarding legal issues, elections, ballot measures, etc., from the national to the local level.

The Coalition of Secular Voters seeks to provide a voice for everyone, regardless of religious belief or non-belief, who understands that protecting the right of American's to worship or not worship as each individual sees fit requires that religion be left to the private domain, not the domain of government or politicians.

Americans from all walks of life and all political parties want political leaders and governing bodies that do not dictate, endorse, pander to, or base laws on religious beliefs. We understand that the religious liberty of the individual is protected best when government and religion are not mixed.

To this end the Coalition of Secular Voters operates - to empower citizens to be vocal, active, and informed voters in support of the wall of separation between church and state.

"The settled opinion here is, that religion is essentially distinct from civil Government, and exempt from its cognizance; that a connection between them is injurious to both;"
- James Madison; Letter to Edward Everett, March 18, 1823

Because religious belief, or non-belief, is such an important part of every person's life, freedom of religion affects every individual. State churches that use government power to support themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of the church tends to make the clergy unresponsive to the people and leads to corruption within religion. Erecting the "wall of separation between church and state," therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society.
We have solved the great and interesting question whether freedom of religion is compatible with order in government and obedience to the laws. And we have experienced the quiet as well as the comfort which results from leaving every one to profess freely and openly those principles of religion which are the inductions of his own reason and the serious convictions of his own inquiries.

- Thomas Jefferson: in a speech to the Virginia Baptists, 1808
